Thursday walk report 6 Sep 2018

Eleven members started from the Barber Booth car park. It
was bad luck that the duration of the walk coincided with
the passage of a rain-bearing weather front. The
precipitation began as we headed up Crowden Clough and
waterproofs which had not seen the light of day for many
weeks over the dry summer began to be dug out from the
bottoms of rucksacks. We paused for a coffee break at the
point where the path diverged from the scrambling route
taking the upper section of the clough. One of the party
opted for the latter while the rest of us continued up the
path. We regrouped at the top of the clough which seemed to
be busy with other walkers. In fact we saw quite a lot of
people coming the other way as we headed downwind east along
the edge of the Kinder plateau. In spite of the rain and
quite low cloud, we still had views down to the valley. We
stopped for lunch at the top of Grindsbrook (north fork).
It was exactly one o’clock and someone remarked that Martin
would approve of the planning of this. There were plenty of
rather damp rocks to sit on and it was a bit of a wet
experience except for one enterprising member who found a
dry perch under a nearby overhang.

After having chilled a little, we were glad to get going
again as we set off continuing round the edge of Kinder,
often on a paved path, over Upper Tor and Nether Tor to the
top of Golden Clough, with good views down to Grindsbrook.
Here we took the descent path to the bottom of Ringing
Roger, and its zig-zag continuation over the Nab and down to
Edale. It was still raining even though the sun was trying
to come out. We passed the start of the Pennine Way and were
disappointed to find that the cafe, which had been mentioned
in the walk information, if not actually promised, was
closed. There followed a flat mile across fields to Barber
Booth with the sound of frequent passing trains reminding us
we were close to the railway. We did a double crossing of
the line to return the cars. the GPS showed that we had done
7.3 miles, with 1620 ft of ascent. The rain reminded us what
typical autumn weather was like in case we had forgotten
over the summer. Of course the rain stopped and the clouds
cleared away soon afterwards.
