Thursday walk 26 Oct 2017 Report

9 members assembled at Calver Crossroads in much drier
conditions than last week. We set off along Hassop Road
before branching off left up a steep grassy path. At this
point, unfortunately, our leader decided that he was not
well enough to carry on, and turned back after describing
the route he had intended. Leaderless, we continued up the
hill until a track was reached and the gradient eased. A quick
check of the GPS and map ensured that we took the right
direction when the track forked. We reached Bramley Lane and
continued along it past Deep Rake and some impressive open
cast workings. Soon after passing Bleaklow Farm we stopped
for a coffee break at a junction with a bridleway. Continuing
along Bramley Lane over High Rake we reached the highest
point of the walk (1250 ft) before dropping down to the road
(Moor Lane). Here we turned north on a path across
Longstone Moor along the sides of fields to reach Black Harry
Gate where stones of various shapes and sizes provided
seating for our picnic. After lunch we strolled down Coombs
Gate back to Calver. Just 6 miles and 1000 feet of ascent.
