Fifteen set off from a murky Blackammor across the moors to a path along the top of Burbage. Views to Carl Wark and Higger Tor were clear. A brief pause at the top of the quarries allowed some to point out completed climbs. Onward and across to the Houndkirk track where some convenient boulders provided seating for a coffee stop. More boggy moor followed and a brief detour to the top of Houndkirk Hill before an exit onto the Hathersage road. We then entered Blackamoor Plantation and descended to a stream crossing. After this we then climbed up through woods and over a broken wall to a sheltered lunch spot. Next came the Blackamoor trig, through a gate on the other side of the boundary wall. Views across Sheffield were extensive. An obligatory group photo ensued before retracing steps but remaining high to take in the autumn colours. A muddy descent and steep ascent lead to Lenny Hill (no trig) but another great viewpoint. The final down and up broke out onto moorland again and a well defined track back to the start. Many new paths for some of these well seasoned walkers in an area so close to the city – courtesy of Ethel Haythornthwaite who bought the land in the 1930s to prevent development and the subsequent gifting of it to the public. 6.5 miles completed in mizzly conditions. Thank you for the banter and company.
