15 of us set out out from Ashford in the water on a dull, but mostly dry day.
Leaving the village we steadily ascended to Monsal Head, where we stopped for coffee on the attractively sited picnic area by the pay & display car park-the line of benches (just sufficient to accommodate us all) facing west to take advantage of the view towards Cressbrook,Miller’s Dale and beyond.
Returning to the route,we headed to the start of the path down to Monsal Dale and the weir.Unfortunately the rather overgrown bushes crowding the narrow path caught and tore Pete’s duvet jacket. After emergency repairs with duck tape the party continued to the weir and bridge downstream only to be confronted by a fallen tree completely blocking the path. This was negotiated with difficulty -either by a byepass route or by an awkward climb over and through the branches.Once past the obstacle we crossed the bridge and followed the muddy riverside path (not helped by the presence of cattle churning the ground).
Once through the mud and over the A6,we continued towards Great Shacklow Woods on somewhat easier ground.
Lunch was taken on the level ground below the woods.
After lunch we continued steeply up and into the woods traversing along a woodland trail before descending to the riverside below Little Shacklow wood.It was then an easy walk back to Ashford and its famous bridge, where some rounded off the day with a visit to the cafe.
Thanks to all who came and for your company.
