ParticipantMeet by the village green (near the former “Headless Woman” pub) in Earl Sterndale. G.R.091670
The route heads over to the eastern foot of Parkhouse Hill, from where it continues below the peak to the foot of Chrome Hill,.which is then climbed and the summit ridge followed to Stoop Farm .From Stoop Farm a steady descent leads below Hollins Hill to Hollins Clough and along the river Dove back to the western base of Park House Hill with the option of climbing it by the west ridge if conditions improve (see note 2 below).Back at the eastern foot of the peak (however reached) return to Earl Sterndon by the outward route. There is then the optian of climbing High Wheeldon & returning by the path from Underhill Farm.
Distance (with high Wheeldon) 11 miles approx or approx 8 without. If youintend to come, please let me know beforehand. Tel 07960716906.
Note :-
1.this meet was originally scheduled to start from Longnor, but on carrying out a full recce on Saturday 17th Jan I found the place rammed full with parked cars.I was told this is normal at week-ends and the only way to guarantee parking is to get there early.Given the distance from Sheffield I have decided to switch to Earl Sterndale which is more spread out with better parking ( but car sharing recommended if possible.I can offer a max of 3 passengers. ).
2.I managed to traverse Parkhouse,Chrome & Wheeldon on my recce, but frankly the conditions on Parkhouse were pretty treachorous and on the long descent down Chrome quite tricky due to very steep ground, wet limestones and mud-a lethal combination! It really needs drier firmer ground, but the long range forecast for the next 2 weeks suggests the current unsettled wet conditions will continue.I have therefore put together a route including Chrome Hill (ascending not descending) & High Wheeldon with the option of including Parkhouse if conditions improve. -
