The day started with a last minute change of plan due to snow-actual and forecast.
9 of us duly met at the Longshawe N.T. car park in cold and snowy conditions. Before starting we had to overcome the challenge of the new parking metre, but fortunately a helpful attendant was at hand!
It was then an easy walk, muddy in places, over the top section of the estate to reach the Surprise View and ascend the path above Millstone Edge.A coffee stop was then taken near the highest point where we admired the view of the Whim Plantation below, little else being visible in the mist.
After reaching the high point we then headed down past the Whim Plantation to reach the Hathersage road.Crossing this we descended steeply into the woods leading to Kettle House-an area new to most.An attractive (if damp) woodland walk followed with dark green moss covered rocks and catkins overhead.
Lunch was taken on a conveniently sited pile of logs.
Emerging fromthe woods we reached the foot of Padley Gorge and walked up the trail to reach Yarncliffe where a pleasant woodland path led up to the edge of the Longshawe estate. We then emerged from the woods to re-enter the snowline again and continue to the heart of the estate. Reaching the cafe 5 members made their farewells and the 4 remaining finished with a welcoming tea and cake .
A pleasant walk-muddy and slippy in places- as usual these days-.but without the threatened snow and sleet showers.
Thanks to all who came.
Mike
