Nine CMC stalwarts gathered at the Kings Tree on an overcast day for a circuit of the Upper Derwent. We set off up beside the river and took an early coffee break at the Cut Gate junction, where two members peeled off for a shorter route. The rest of us carried on up to the junction with Lower Small Clough, where the Derwent was crossed without incident and we climbed up to a lunch stop at the shooting cabins.
A little more uphill walking along the cut took us to the turn for Black Dike, which was followed (with one inadvertent kink) to Nether Moor. After a slight overshoot, the faint path across Cow Hey was located, which took us to the sloping descent into Linch Clough then through tall bracken on the way out.
Despite intermittent drizzle, a few midges and lack of sunshine to make the heather glow, we had a nice day out.
