12 members met at the Carr Lane parking between Yorkshire
Bridge and Thornhill for a walk round Win Hill, although
some of the group never intended to do the whole walk. The
weather was cold and clear, with a chilly wind, and the mud
mostly frozen. The walk was a slightly modified version of
one led by the Late Sean Jennings in 2017. Down the lane,
up through the woods and through fields took us past
Ryecroft (also known as Hallum Barn) to the road at Aston.
This section of the walk involved negotiating numerous
stiles of various designs and in various states of repair,
some more challenging than others. It was amusing watching
the diverse methods used by different people. On reaching
the road at Aston, 5 of the party decided this would be a
good point to turn back for a shorter walk. The remaining
seven of us headed up the lane for a break at the
    convenient benches outside Edge Farm.

After coffee we took the gently rising path passing above
Twitchill Farm. We reached the open hillside of Hope Brink
where we enjoyed a superb view of Lose Hill and Mam Tor to
the west. The gently rising path was delightful. We met the
well trodden route between Win Hill and Hope Cross before
turning back along the edge of the forest flanking the
western arm of Ladybower Reservoir. We soon paused for
lunch, taken out of the wind in the welcome shelter of an
old wall. After the break we continued along the edge of the
forest. At a gate through the boundary fence we turned
down into the woods. This was a deviation from Sean’s route.
The latter now has an extremely muddy section descending
from Thornhill Carrs which we wished to avoid. On our route
we had glimpses of Crook Hill and Ashopton Viaduct. On
emerging from the forest we took the track alongside the
reservoir, past the western end of Ladybower Dam, and
then then Derwent Valley Trail along the old railway line
back to the cars. Distance 6.7 miles and 1150 ft of ascent.
